Uganda - II - Special Visits

Famke connected us with a beautiful family who invited us over for a meal. They were very welcoming and it was lovely to connect. Their teenage son has Down syndrome and obviously we had a lot in common, even tough we live worlds apart. Their house was tiny, yet they took pride in hosting a mzungu family for the afternoon.

On an other day, we visited Mama Davin, a mother of one of Famke's sponsor children. Mama Davin proudly welcomed us in her little two-room house. She gave us a delicious breakfast, which consisted of samosas, chapati, and Ugandan tea. She shared her life story with us. For the most part, she was on her own to raise her children. With three young children, one of whom is deaf, it was a stressful life. She worked various jobs, from early in the morning until late at night, just to provide for her children. Then Famke crossed her path and a sponsor was found for her deaf son. Suddenly she no longer had to worry about his school fees and she had a little left at the end of the month to save. She moved into the house where she now lives; was able to buy a triple bunk bed for her children who were overjoyed not having to share a mattress any more, and Mama Davin was able to take on one job less a day. Suddenly there was time left to spend with the children and Mama Davin said she felt so much better physically and mentally than before... A difference has been made!

Do you want to make a difference in a child's life and that of their family? Consider donating to Famke's foundation Signs of Hope. The money she is currently raising all goes straight into building a new school for the Deaf, where every Deaf child gets a chance to reach their potential and where they will feel loved and respected.

As you know, I have set up a fundraiser to support Famke's foundation. Please consider a donation!
