Transfrontier National Park

After four very special weeks we left Namibia. At Mata Mata border post we entered Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, which is a wildlife preserve in the Kalahari Desert region of Botswana and South Africa.

We had no idea what to expect apart from the fact that we knew this was a good area to watch big cats.

We have seen these large nests before, but this time we saw a lot of them. Small birds, the sociable weavers, construct these permanent nests. They are amongst the largest built by any bird, and are large enough to house over 100 pairs of birds!! We think Dr. Seuss might have taken these nests as inspiration for some of his creations ;)

We spent a few days in this park and encountered again so many beautiful animals. The wildebeest is actually an animal we have seen a lot, but quite often I do not take any pictures as they are not as colourful and active as other species. This time I thought I should give them a little attention and a place to shine.

And so the big cat action began! The kill of the oryx we did not see, but the satisfied male lion was a pleasure to watch.

We encountered four cheetahs which we followed for quite some time. They hunted wildebeest but lost interest and wandered away, right passed the car of A&A, with whom we enjoyed this special sight.

We have seen many beautiful birds during our travels so far and this park did not disappoint either! Quite often they fly away before I can take a picture, but here are some that were curious enough to hang around long enough for me to take their picture.

We ate our lunch twice in this beautiful picnic spot. The first time we enjoyed a pair of agamas, the second time giraffes walked passed at a reasonable distance.

Let's say our lunch always took a long time as the distractions were plentiful.

One of the last animals we saw in this park was the meerkat. The kids were very excited to see these funny little animals. The meerkats were so quick that it was hard to capture them in a picture.

The African hoopoe was a bird we saw a few times, but never did it show us its crest. It still was a lovely bird to see. Back into South Africa we went!
