Beautiful Greece

After Italy, we were fortunate to spend some time in Greece. Did you know that no part of Greece is more than 137 kilometers away from the ocean?

Our ferry from Bari, Italy, was supposed to leave at 8pm, it left at 9pm. The duration of the trip to Igoumenitsa, Greece, was supposed to be between 8 and 10 hours. It took 12 hours... welcome to the southern European way of life!

We sailed the last part between Albania and the Greek island of Corfu. Such a beautiful stretch. Igoumenitsa basked in sunshine when we arrived. An unusual load of wind turbine parts was waiting on the shore...

We drove over the mainland to the peninsula of the Peloponnese Region. Our first real stop was at the Archaeological Site of Olympia, that hosted the original Olympic Games, founded in the 8th century B.C. It was such an impressive place, the history here was felt with every step we took. The kids had fun performing on THE field where so many years ago the competitions were held. It was a hot, but super interesting destination.

We spent time in Kalamata, where our campsite was across the street from this beautiful bay. We swam, we did laundry, we rejuvenated, and enjoyed the Greek cuisine.

On our way to Athens, we stopped at the Corinth Canal. We had hoped to see the big ships inch through it, but... we did not know that they had a series of landslides in 2021 that made the canal impassable. Following the landslides, the Greek government decided to take this opportunity to do vital restorations...

Did I already mention it was hot in Greece? A normal day had an high of, on average, 35°C! The watermelons we bought were a sweet treat these days :)

The highlight of Athens obviously was the Acropolis. We climbed the slopes, admired the ancient remains on the way, and followed the crowd to the top, where the Parthenon and other ancient buildings give us a glimpse into ancient times.

The kids were troopers, it was soo hot and they never complained!

As a family we drank at least 12 liters of water that day, just to keep hydrated.

We left the dusty, hot city and drove just a little while until we found this most amazing bay lined with palm trees. We found a campsite and the host gave us an ocean front site. We thoroughly enjoyed every minute of our stay here in Agios Konstantinos.

We might not have seen much wildlife till so far, but we do see a whole lot of interesting bugs and other creatures, like this one.

I have said, from the start of this trip, that I hoped to celebrate my birthday in a sunny place in Greece. Well, this gorgeous beach was where I took a morning swim on my birthday! It was our last morning in Greece, the remainder of my birthday we celebrated in Bulgaria.
